A combined team of security agents and local vigilantes have uncovered the decomposing corpses of missing police officers who herders allegedly killed in Delta state.
The incident took place during a search and rescue operation for three missing police officers in the Ohoror community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.
The missing officers had responded to a distress call on January 24, 2024, from Moses Progress, who was under attack by herders while performing a ritual sacrifice to the river gods under a bridge in Ohoror community. The distress call led to the disappearance of the police officers.
A joint team of security agents and vigilantes initiated a search operation on Sunday, uncovering the operational huts of the suspected killer herdsmen.
Tragically, they found the bodies of the missing police officers, bringing the total number of corpses discovered in the Agadama bush to six.
The officers had been killed, and the assailants reportedly stole their rifles and ammunition. The recovered bodies have been deposited at the morgue of Mariere Central Hospital in Ughelli.
A security source revealed to Sahara Reporters that a manhunt has been launched to track down the perpetrators, and discussions are underway on how to address the issue of killer herders who have reportedly taken control of forests and bushes in Delta State.
