BREAKING: Labour fumes as FG proposes N48,000 minimum wage

The federal government has proposed a new minimum wage of N48,000 for workers in the country.

The government’s position was presented to labour at the resumed tripartite committee meeting on Wednesday, May 15.

Politics Nigeria understands that labour leaders present at the meeting, however,  rejected the N48,000 proposed new minimum wage.

In protest, the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) leaders walked out of the virtual meeting.

Speaking on the matter, a labour leader who was part of the meeting said the federal government was not serious about giving workers a living wage.

“What the government has presented to us is wage reduction. This government is not serious about giving workers a living wage,” he said.

The spokesman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Benson Upah also confirmed labour’s position after the meeting.

“Yes we are out. We are about to address the press and you will get the details then,” Upah said.

President Bola Tinubu had on May Day promised workers a living wage, assuring them that their days of waiting for a living wage were over.

NLC and TUC earlier proposed N615,000 as minimum wage, citing the high cost of living as the yardstick for the proposal.
