Tragedy struck in the Papa Ajao area of Mushin, Lagos, on Sunday as a mosque on Yusuf Street, off Ladipo Road, collapsed during prayer time.
The Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that one person has died and five others were rescued from the rubble.
Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, the permanent secretary of LASEMA, provided details on the incident.
According to him, the collapse occurred while prayers were ongoing, leading to an immediate emergency response.
He said LASEMA quickly mobilized its Response Team to the scene, working alongside the police, the Lagos State Ambulance Service, and the Lagos State Fire Service.
He stated that the coordinated efforts of the agencies were crucial in rescuing five individuals from the collapsed structure.
“The mosque collapsed during prayer time, which unfortunately resulted in one fatality,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
“Our teams are on the ground, conducting search and rescue operations to ensure that no one else is trapped under the debris,” he added
The rescue operations were carried out under the supervision of Oke-Osanyintolu.
He noted that the responders utilized specialized equipment and techniques to locate and extract the trapped individuals.
He added that the rescued persons were provided with immediate medical attention and transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collapse.
