A residential building has collapsed in the Isale Eko area of Lagos State, reportedly trapping many people inside.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at about 11 am today.
The building, which had been alleged to be defective, succumbed to structural failure following a fire in parts of the nearby Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island.
A rescue operation is currently ongoing to save victims trapped in the building which collapsed at number 15, Iga Idungaran, close to Oba of Lagos, Rilwanu Akiolu’s palace, Lagos Island.
Ibrahim Farinloye, the Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the collapse.
He noted that 14 other buildings were also significantly impacted by the fire.
Emergency responders, including personnel from NEMA, Federal and State Fire Services, the Nigeria Police, and the Nigeria Ports Authority fire service, are at the scene.
This incident comes on the heels of a similar disaster in April when four buildings collapsed due to an intense fire that ravaged parts of Dosunmu Market.
