BREAKING: Examinations Will Proceed As Planned Despite Nationwide Strike – WAEC

The West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured that the upcoming nationwide strike will not disrupt examinations in Ekiti State and across the country.

Mrs. T.A.Y. Lawson, Branch Controller (Ekiti), made this announcement in a letter to Principals and school heads in the state.

The letter, titled “Notice of Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC,” stated that the examination body is aware of the planned strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) but will proceed with the scheduled examinations.

The letter read, “The attention of Management has been drawn to a notice of the Commencement of Indefinite Strike by NLC and TUC effective, Monday, 3rd June 2024. Please be formally informed that the conduct of WASSCE SC 2024 goes on as scheduled.”

The letter was issued on Friday.

Lawson said that WAEC shares the concerns of the unions but believes that students should not be disadvantaged by missing the ongoing examination in Nigeria and other West African states.

“In as much as we share the concerns of the unions and the generality of Nigerians, the WASSCE SC is going on across the member Countries of WAEC, and the Nigerian Child should not be put to a disadvantage of missing the exam,” she said.

The examination body urged school principals, supervisors, parents, and the general public to take note and make necessary arrangements for candidates to sit for the exam.

It should be recalled that the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress announced the commencement of the strike on Friday due to a breakdown in negotiations on the proposed new minimum wage.
