VP Shettima Speaks on Tinubu Using Instruments of Government to Influence Electoral Process

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said President Bola Tinubu is committed to political freedom, fair play, and justice, and that he has never used his office to influence the electoral process.

Shettima made the disclosure while speaking at the 30th anniversary of Malam Yusuf Ali’s (SAN) Ghalib Chambers in Ilorin, Kwara State on Saturday.

According to him, the presidency has not used its instruments to hunt or hound perceived opponents.

“President Bola Tinubu never influenced electoral process and we (presidency) never used instruments of office to hunt or hound perceived opponents,” he said.

The vice president stressed that democracy can only thrive through adherence to the rule of law and quality governance, rather than the system of government.

Meanwhile, former Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), who delivered a keynote address at the event, cautioned against the call for a return to the parliamentary system of government.

Fashola argued that this system had failed in the past and led to unwarranted disasters. Instead, he advocated for liberal democracy, which prioritizes quality governance and improved livelihood for Nigerians.

The event celebrated Malam Yusuf Ali’s contributions to the nation’s legal system, with Fashola commending his robust contributions.

Ali expressed gratitude for the success of his firm, Ghalib Chambers, and the infinite favour and blessings he has received.

Recall that in 2019, Bola Tinubu, the then National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had said his moral authority plays a role in his ability to influence elections.

He also said that other tools that helped him influence elections were his skills as a veteran politician and dedication to campaigning and mobilising his own party members.

It can be recalled that in 2023, President Tinubu defeated opponents to win the presidential election.
