Singer and Activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has vowed to support the labour unions in their ongoing strike.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the singer has threatened to mobilize 90% of Nigeria’s power bikers for a rally in Abuja if the strike is not called off by next week.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) embarked on an indefinite strike on Monday, demanding a new minimum wage and a reevaluation of electricity price increases.
Although an agreement was reached with the federal government late Monday, Charly Boy said he would join the protest if the strike isn’t halted.
In a post on his social media handle, he wrote in Pidgin, “If NLC no f**k up and cancel this strike by next week, I go mobilize 90% of Nigerias Power Bikers. We go storm Abuja, if heaven go fall or the devil go land. We will say, bring it on. I just tire. Yeye dey smell.”
Meanwhile, the NLC has clarified that the strike is still ongoing, contrary to reports suggesting an agreement with the federal government.
In a statement on social media, the NLC stated, “Wrong news! We are still on strike until we get consent from our NEC meeting.”
The federal government agreed to pay a higher national minimum wage than its initial proposal of N60,000 during the meeting with labour leaders on Monday evening in Abuja.
