Air Vice Marshal Adebayo Hamed Lawal (rtd), former Minister of Youth and Sports and one-time Military Administrator of Benue State, has passed away at the age of 83.
His daughter, Mrs Yinka Enahoro, confirmed that AVM Lawal died peacefully in his sleep on the early morning of Sunday, June 23, 2024, at his home.
Air Commodore Sani Zakari (rtd), the Sergeant at Arms at the National Assembly, also confirmed the news, noting that the funeral will take place on Monday.
“AVM Frank Ajobena (rtd) further informed us that AVM Bayo Lawal passed on in his sleep at the early hours of Sunday 23 Jun 24,” Zakari stated.
Born on September 14, 1941, in Offa, Kwara State, AVM Lawal attended Government College, Ibadan, from 1955 to 1962 before joining the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in 1963 as one of its pioneer officers. He trained as a Military Pilot in West Germany, graduating in 1964.
His distinguished military career included numerous key postings:
- Commander, NAF Port Harcourt (1969–1970)
- Commander, Enugu Air Force Base (1970–1972)
- Commander, NAF Kano (1972–1973, 1975–1977)
- Air Officer Commanding HQ Tactical Air Command, NAF Makurdi (1977–1978)
AVM Lawal served as the Commander of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi from 1977 to 1978 before being appointed the Military Governor of Benue State in July 1978, a position he held until October 1979.
He later became the Director of Air Faculty Command and Staff College, Jaji, and was appointed as the Federal Minister of Youth and Sports.
After retiring from the military, AVM Lawal ventured into business and dedicated himself to faith-based philanthropic activities.
He was known for his vibrant and active role as a fighter pilot and his significant contributions to the Nigerian Air Force and the nation.
AVM Lawal is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
