36 State Governors to Meet, Discuss Supreme Court’s Ruling on LG Autonomy

The 36 state governors in Nigeria have expressed their satisfaction with the Supreme Court’s judgment granting fiscal autonomy to local government areas.

Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman, disclosed this while speaking to State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

AbdulRahman noted that the NGF has requested the enrollment of the judgment and will review it next Wednesday to decide on the way forward.

“The forum will meet next Wednesday, to look at the issue wholly and then come up with a resolution on that.”

“Like I said, we haven’t seen the enrollment of the court order and so we really don’t know what is in there,” he stated.

AbdulRahman assured that the judgment will not negatively affect Kwara State, as they have never tampered with local government funds. Instead, he said it will enable local governments to manage themselves effectively, especially with the upcoming minimum wage.

AbdulRahman was accompanied by his Imo State counterpart, Hope Uzodimma, at the Presidential Villa, where they discussed various issues with President Bola Tinubu, including the minimum wage, the Supreme Court ruling, and other national issues affecting states.
