“31 Suleja prison escapees still at large” – Nigerian Correctional Service alerts public

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has issued a public alert regarding 31 inmates who remain at large following their escape from Suleja prison.

The escapees, considered dangerous to public safety and national security, have been on the run since a prison break triggered by a severe downpour on April 24, which caused significant damage to the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger State.

In a statement released in Abuja on Thursday, the Service Public Relations Officer, Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC) Abubakar Umar, called on the public to assist in recapturing the escaped inmates.

He said after the incident, where approximately 119 inmates escaped, the NCoS has implemented both overt and covert measures to track down the escapees.

He added that security across custodial facilities nationwide has been enhanced to prevent further breaches.

Umar detailed that the NCoS had disseminated information about some of the fugitives from the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre to other security agencies and the public.

“This has become pertinent in an effort to recapture them and bring them back to custody.

“The information of the fugitives are hereby published for sister security agencies, as well as the general public, to look out for them in an attempt to recapture them and bring them back to the facility.”

The NCoS urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of the escapees to come forward and assist in ensuring the safety and security of the society.
