BREAKING: Gunshots Fired as Protesters Clash With Police in Niger State

Gunshots were heard as protesters clashed with police at the Top Medical junction in the Tunga area of Minna, the Niger State capital.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Nigerians have taken to the streets, demanding good governance amidst the country’s bad economic situation.

The confrontation in Minna began when protesters attempted to block the busy road, prompting the police to fire teargas to disperse them. However, the protesters regrouped and tried to mount a roadblock, forcing the policemen to fire gunshots into the air to scare them away.

Policemen and vigilantes eventually removed stones used by the protesters to barricade a section of the road.

Security operatives have taken control of perceived hotspots, including the popular Kpakungu Roundabout on Minna-Bida road, where protests were held earlier this year. The heavy security presence includes personnel from the police, military, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

The situation has led to market closures and shuttered shops, as traders fear potential looting.
