Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued a strong rebuke against the recent social media call for a protest under the hashtag #IgboMustGo, which demands the removal of Igbo people from Lagos and the Southwest region of Nigeria.
The governor’s reaction comes five days after the campaign was started by a pro-Lagos X account, @lagospedia and hours after former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar condemned the move.
Social media users have revealed that one Ifeoluwa Bolaji from Ikorodu is behind the account. His photos have also been shared online.
One user offered a reward of N900,000 to anyone who can fish out Bolaji. The account has since been deleted on the micro-blogging app.
Gboyega Akosile, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Sanwo-Olu distanced the governor and the Lagos State Government from the “reckless, divisive, and dangerous rhetoric” promoted by LagosPedia.
The Governor stated that Lagos remains a home for every Nigerian citizen, regardless of ethnic background.
Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned the post as an attempt to create discord between the Yoruba and other ethnic groups, particularly those who have made Lagos their home.
He called on all Lagosians to reject such divisive messages and not let them create unnecessary tension within the state.
“The post is not only reckless but also aims to sow discord between the Yoruba and other tribes.
“Lagos is a city for all Nigerians, and we will not tolerate any attempt to undermine our unity,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The Governor has urged security agencies to investigate the individuals behind the provocative post and bring them to justice.
He reassured Lagosians of his commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the state.
“I appeal to all Lagosians to ignore such inflammatory posts and remain focused on fostering peace and unity.
“My administration will continue to work diligently to ensure lasting peace in Lagos,” the statement concluded.
