Heavily armed security personnel continues to lay siege on Lagos-based activists’ office

Heavily armed security operatives are currently laying siege to the office of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) at Ikeja Lagos.

The move is part of the government’s ongoing clampdown on civil society organisations suspected of funding the recent hunger protests nationwide.

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, recently alleged that the protests were sponsored by coordinated efforts that included foreign backers.

In a post on X, Amnesty International wrote:

”Heavily armed contingent of policemen, soldiers and other security personnel are still laying an unlawful siege on the area around the office of Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) at Ikeja Lagos. This glaring show of impunity must end.

”The siege by armed security personnel is unlawful. Apart from forcing businesses around the area to abruptly close, the siege is preventing CDHR from doing its work.

”Attacks on human rights defenders and their offices sends a message that authorities condone these violations.”
