Protests: “Review your policies, acknowledge your mistakes” – Former Kano governor tells Tinubu

Former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau has called on the Bola Tinubu-led administration to revisit its economic policies and acknowledge any errors made.

The former governor’s remarks come amidst widespread discontent over the government’s recent economic measures, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the floating of the naira.

Since President Tinubu announced the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023, the cost of petrol has surged dramatically, leading to a significant rise in inflation.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reported an inflation rate of 34% in June 2024, exacerbating the cost of living for millions of Nigerians.

Shekarau emphasized the need for the government to evaluate its policies critically.

“The best learning is when you learn through your mistakes,” he stated during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Shekarau urged the administration to assess where it may have gone wrong and consider adjusting its approach.

He suggested that a thorough review could help identify and address areas contributing to the ongoing crisis of high living costs and inflation.

“Let the government sit back and identify: ‘What areas have you made some errors? What mistakes have you made? What pronouncements have been made in error? What policies were put in place that are really breeding this kind of crisis of hunger and high cost of living and inflation [food] of 40 percent’?

“Admit there are some wrongs that have been committed; some errors and probably certain things have been taken for granted. This is the time to sit back and address them,” he said.
