After 10 Years, Anambra Sets Date for Local Government Elections

The Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) has announced that local government elections will be held in the state on September 28, 2024, after a 10-year wait.

This decision comes after two years of governance by Professor Chukwuma Soludo and mounting pressure from Civil Society Organizations and other stakeholders.

In a press statement released on Monday, ANSIEC Chairman Genevieve C. Osakwe informed registered political parties and the general public of the upcoming elections. The statement outlined the election timetable and schedule of activities, which can be obtained from the ANSIEC headquarters in Awka starting from August 14, 2024.

This development follows Governor Soludo’s inauguration of the ANSIEC members last week, where he stressed the need for a clean and credible election. The local government election was a key agenda item at the state’s weekly Executive Council meeting on Monday.

The last local government election in Anambra State was held in 2013 during former Governor Peter Obi’s tenure. Since then, caretaker committees have been managing the third tier of government.

No local government elections have been conducted during the eight-year reign of Willie Obiano.
