Kebbi State Assembly Amends Local Government Law, Extends Tenure of Elected Officials

The Kebbi State House of Assembly has passed two bills into law, effectively amending the state’s local government system.

The amended bills extend the tenure of elected chairmen and councillors from two to three years and establish the Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission.

The bills, presented by Hon. Muhammad Dangoje and Hon. Muhammad Abubakar, respectively, sailed through the third reading and were unanimously passed into law on the floor of the House in Birnin Kebbi yesterday.

Speaking to journalists after the passage, Hon. Dangoje explained that the first bill seeks to amend the Kebbi State Local Government Law 2008, specifically to elongate the tenure of elected local government council members.

He said, “This amendment aims to provide stability and continuity in local government administration, allowing council members to implement long-term development projects while the second bill establishes the Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission, repealing and re-enacting the Kebbi State Local Government Service Board and this new commission will be responsible for overseeing the management of local government staff, ensuring professionalism and efficiency in service delivery.”

The second bill establishes the Kebbi State Local Government Service Commission, repealing and re-enacting the Kebbi State Local Government Service Board. This new commission will oversee the management of local government staff.
