The proposed meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), originally scheduled for today, has been postponed.
ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed the postponement on Monday, stating that the meeting, which was initially announced by the Minister of Education last Friday, will now take place on Wednesday, August 28.
No official reason was provided for the delay.
The meeting is crucial as public university lecturers have threatened to embark on a nationwide strike.
This decision follows resolutions reached at ASUU’s national executive council meeting held at the University of Ibadan on August 19, 2024.
The union’s demands include improved welfare for lecturers, better funding for universities, and a halt to the proliferation of universities nationwide.
The impending strike is a response to the Federal Government’s failure to honour the 2009 renegotiated agreement with ASUU.
