Okupe: NLC President not above the law, criticizes strike threat over police summons

Doyin Okupe, former Director-General of the Obi/Datti Campaign Organization, has asserted that Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero is not above the law, following the terrorism charge against him by the Nigeria Police.

Okupe criticized the NLC’s threat of a nationwide strike in response to Ajaero’s police invitation, calling it unwarranted and potentially setting a dangerous precedent.

He stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and cautioned against giving the impression that certain individuals or organizations are exempt from legal scrutiny.

While defending the police’s right to summon high-profile individuals, Okupe also advised the police to be mindful of how their actions might be perceived, recommending that in some cases, the police could approach such individuals at their residences or workplaces to avoid creating an image of oppression.

“Also, the police may in some circumstances, adopt the approach to visit some high network people or people not directly involved in criminality, in their residences or places of work. It does not demean the Police in anyway.

“The Nigerian Police must avoid situations whereby in the discharge of their lawful duties, they give the impression of an oppressive force instead of a friendly and a professional one,” Okupe advised on his X handle.
