50 MW solar: Lagos, Chinese firm sign MoU to power LASU, other institutions

Lagos State has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese company to deploy solar power systems across key educational institutions.

The agreement was unveiled by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the Africa-China Cooperation Summit (#FOCAC2024) in Beijing, with President Bola Tinubu present.

Governor Sanwo-Olu stated that the initiative, which aims to generate 50 megawatts (MW) of solar power, will target Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State College of Medicine.

“This project will reduce our institutions’ dependence on grid electricity and fossil fuels, contributing significantly to environmental sustainability,” he said.

President Tinubu praised the MoU as a critical step in Nigeria’s energy transition, emphasizing the importance of international partnerships in advancing the country’s renewable energy goals.

The development aligns with Lagos State’s vision of becoming a leader in renewable energy and reducing its carbon footprint.
