President Bola Tinubu on Monday, directed that a Disaster Relief Fund be established in response to the recent devastating Maiduguri flood.
President Tinubu gave the directive on Monday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting which he presided over.
Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun announced this during a news briefing.
According to Edun, there is a need for dedicated funding to address emergencies such as the Maiduguri flood.
The minister revealed that the federal government will hold engagements with key stakeholders to secure funding for the relief efforts.
Politics Nigeria reported that the Maiduguri flood, which was a result of the collapse of water channels at the Alau Dam, displaced many residents of Maiduguri.
Residential quarters, including parts of the Shehu of Borno Palace, Maiduguri Central Market, and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, were submerged.
Roads and bridges were also submerged resulting in the inaccessibility of many areas.
GRA, Maiduguri Zoo, College of Nursing, College of Agriculture, and School of Health Technology, among others, are areas also badly hit by the flood.
