The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has pledged strict action against Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) officials implicated in the controversial apartment-for-prison scandal involving cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky.
Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja marking his one year in office, Tunji-Ojo vowed that those found culpable in the ongoing investigation would face severe consequences.
The scandal, which has gained widespread attention on social and traditional media, involves allegations that NCoS officials arranged a private apartment for Bobrisky to serve his jail term instead of a prison cell.
The cross-dresser was sentenced to six months imprisonment by a federal high court in Lagos for naira abuse.
Tunji-Ojo assured the public that the probe into the matter would be thorough, with a high-level panel tasked with ensuring accountability within the Correctional Service.
“No personnel or officer involved will be spared,” he stated.
In addition to addressing the prison scandal, the minister also announced reforms to improve passport services for Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
He said starting in October, the Federal Government will implement an Automated Passport Application system, aimed at streamlining the process for Nigerians abroad.
