“Democracy has come to stay” – Atiku says after voting at ADC primaries

Former Vice President of Nigeria and presidential aspirant in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has declared that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria.

Atiku made the remark on Monday, May 25, 2026, after casting his vote at the Ajiya Ward Polling Unit in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State.

The ADC presidential primary was held simultaneously across 8,809 wards in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Casting his vote amid a cheering crowd of party faithful, Atiku said the impressive turnout was a clear sign of members’ commitment to internal democracy within the ADC.

“I have no doubt that democracy has come to stay,” he said.

A statement issued by Atiku’s media office said voting commenced shortly after the former vice president arrived at the polling unit.

Atiku is contesting the 2027 ADC presidential ticket alongside former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatudeen, who is voting in Abuja.

The returning officer for the ward, Hon. Umar Jada, announced that Ajiya Ward had unanimously endorsed Atiku’s candidature.

According to the statement, Atiku, also known as the Waziri Adamawa, led a long queue of voters, and at the end of the exercise, he polled 3,220 votes.
