Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu has commiserated with the family, friends and relatives of the late Humphrey Nwosu who died in a United States hospital on October 24.
The president described the late Nwosu, a former chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) now Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as a bold and courageous administrator.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser, Information and Strategy, Tinubu expressed sorrow at the passing of “a patriot and national asset”.
According to Tinubu, the late Nwosu played a significant role in shaping the democracy that Nigeria enjoys today.
“President Tinubu affirms that the greatest honour to champions of democracy like Nwosu is to ensure that elections in the country remain credible, transparent and democratic, reflecting the people’s right to choose their leaders and shape their future,” Onanuga said.
Nwosu served as the chairman of NEC from 1989 to 1993.
He was the electoral umpire who oversaw the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election annulled by General Ibrahim Babangida.
The President also prayed for God Almighty to grant the soul of the departed political scientist eternal rest and give divine comfort to those who mourn him.
