Ademola Lookman, the Nigeria and Atalanta forward, stands as Africa’s sole representative at the prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris today.
The 27-year-old heads into the event after an outstanding performance, scoring twice and providing two assists in Atalanta’s recent 6-1 victory.
“It’s special being on the list and even more special being the only African,” Lookman expressed to BBC Sport Africa.
His nomination marks a significant milestone, highlighting his exceptional year.
He made headlines as the first player since 1975 to score a hat-trick in a European final, leading Atalanta to their first-ever Europa League triumph against Bayer Leverkusen.
“Those are the moments you wish and dream for,” he reflected on that memorable night. Lookman’s journey since joining Atalanta in August 2022 has been remarkable. Under coach Gian Piero Gasperini, he has adapted to Italian football and flourished.
“Coming out of my comfort zone is never easy, but I’m open to that idea of learning and wanting to be better,” Lookman stated, showcasing his commitment to both personal and professional growth.
His stellar performances have also positioned him as a favourite for the 2024 CAF Player of the Year award, where he faces tough competition, including his compatriot William Troost-Ekong.
Despite his individual accolades, Lookman remains focused on collective achievements with the Super Eagles. His contributions were instrumental in Nigeria’s run to the 2023 AFCON final, where they finished as runners-up to hosts Ivory Coast.
“I’m anticipating the future because I’m looking forward to achieving great things,” Lookman said. “I’m never really satisfied. That’s always my mindset – let’s go for more.”
