In a recent interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Doyin Okupe, former director-general of the Obi/Datti presidential campaign, affirmed that an agreement exists concerning the presidential tenures in Nigeria.
He stated that the northern region would have a total of eight years in power, followed by a similar term for the south.
“Buhari did eight years as president, and now Bola Ahmed Tinubu will do eight years if he wants to,” Okupe declared.
Okupe expressed confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, predicting that he could secure a second term in 2027 if he effectively addresses Nigeria’s pressing challenges.
“Tinubu is doing exceedingly well, and he’s going to do much, much better. If we do not go through this tough time, the country would have collapsed,” he added, emphasising the need for support rather than criticism.
He believes that if Tinubu can resolve the ongoing fuel and food crises, public sentiment will shift dramatically in his favour.
“Nigerians will decide so. I am sure. Nigerians are reasonable, sensible people, not demanding too much from their leaders,” Okupe asserted.
Reflecting on the stakes of Tinubu’s presidency, Okupe stated, “Bola Tinubu is not a fool. He knows if he does not do this well between now and 2027, he will not have a chance.”
He concluded by reiterating the existing agreement on regional tenures, confident that with God’s blessings, Tinubu can complete his eight years successfully.
