A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated on Tuesday at the Orlu International Market in Imo State, leading to the tragic deaths of two people and injuring several others.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple explosions, which led to panic and a rush to evacuate the area.
According to the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Henry Okoye, the two fatalities were reportedly handling the device when it exploded, indicating that they may have been assembling the IED before it detonated prematurely.
His words: “It was an IED that exploded. The Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has deployed Anti-Bomb operatives to the scene.
“Two persons who incidentally were the hoodlums were killed in the process of setting up an IED and in the process, it exploded.”
PPRO Okoye assured the public that law enforcement is actively monitoring the situation.
He urged residents to stay calm, remain vigilant, and promptly report any suspicious activities.
