Nigerian Embassy in Philippines Bars Unregistered Citizens From Official Services

The Nigerian Embassy in Manila, Philippines, has announced a new policy barring Nigerians who are not registered with the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Philippines (NIDOPHIL) from accessing consular services.
The directive was contained in a public notice issued by the embassy on May 20, 2026. It applies to Nigerians living in the Philippines and the Kingdom of Cambodia.
According to the embassy, the move became necessary after authorities discovered that only a small number of Nigerians in the Philippines were captured in the official NIDOPHIL database.
“The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Manila, Philippines wishes to inform all Nigerian nationals residing in the Philippines that the Embassy has observed with dismay the very low number of Nigerians registered in the official Database of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization Philippines (NIDOPHIL),” the statement read.
The embassy explained that the database is important for proper documentation of Nigerians abroad and also helps officials monitor the welfare of citizens living in the country.
“The Database serves as an important tool for both the Embassy and NIDOPHIL in keeping proper records, monitoring the welfare of Nigerians, and providing timely assistance when necessary,” the statement said.
Officials added that dues paid by registered members are also used to support Nigerians facing financial hardship or emergency situations in the Philippines.
“Furthermore, the monthly/annual dues paid by registered members are utilized in supporting Nigerians who are stranded or facing severe financial difficulties within the Philippines,” the notice added.
The embassy said the new policy was introduced to improve coordination and accountability among Nigerians residing in the Asian country.
“In view of the foregoing, and in order to ensure proper documentation, accountability, and effective coordination among Nigerians in the Philippines, the Embassy hereby wishes to notify all concerned that henceforth, no Nigerian national shall be attended to on any consular matter without presenting evidence of NIDOPHIL registration,” the statement said.
The mission further warned that Nigerians without proof of registration would not be allowed access into the embassy premises through the Dasmariñas Village Gate for consular services.
“As a matter of policy, individuals without proof of registration shall not be granted entry through the Dasmariñas Village Gate for consular-related services at the Embassy premises,” it stated.
The restriction, according to the embassy, also covers Nigerian students studying in the Philippines.
“Kindly note that this restriction also applies to all Nigerian students in the Philippines.”
To ease compliance, the embassy shared registration links for NIDOPHIL and the National Association of Nigerian Students, while noting that registration details for Nigerians living in Cambodia would be released later.
“Please be informed that the NIDO Cambodia registration details will be shared as soon as possible,” the statement added.
The embassy urged all affected Nigerians to comply with the directive to avoid disruptions when seeking consular assistance.
“All Nigerians are advised to comply strictly with this directive in their own interest. Please be guided accordingly,” the notice concluded.
In a related development, Cambodian authorities recently issued a fresh immigration directive ordering African nationals residing illegally in the country to leave before May 31, 2026, or face arrest and prosecution.
The warning was contained in an official notice released by Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration under the Ministry of Interior.
The directive affected several African nationals, including citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda and others currently living in Cambodia under temporary waivers or expired residency arrangements.
According to Cambodian authorities, “the waiver granted to you will officially end on 31st of May 2026.”
The government instructed all affected foreigners to leave the country before the deadline expires.
“All foreign nationals whose fines have been cleared must leave Cambodia on or before 31st of May 2026,” the notice stated.
Authorities warned that any foreigner found in Cambodia illegally from June 1, 2026, would be arrested either at the airport or anywhere within the country.
It added that offenders “shall serve a jail term of 2 (two) years; and pay a penalty of $8,000 (Eight Thousand US Dollars) before being allowed to leave Cambodia.”
Cambodian officials also disclosed that security agencies would begin nationwide arrests of undocumented foreigners immediately after the deadline.
“The Cambodia Police will start arresting any foreigner at any hideout in Cambodia from 1st of June 2026 for overstay and will hand over to the immigration authorities for legal action,” the notice added.
