President Bola Tinubu has come under intense criticism for advising Nigerians to manage their electricity bills by switching off their lights.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the remark by the president was made during his presidential media chat, leading to outrage among many Nigerians who are already struggling to make ends meet.
Human rights lawyer Malcolm Omirhobo was quick to condemn the President’s statement, describing him as a hypocrite. Omirhobo argued that it was hypocritical for Tinubu to advise Nigerians to manage their electricity bills when he had failed to cut down the cost of governance.
“It is hypocritical for Tinubu to advise Nigerians to learn to manage by learning to control their electricity bill by switching off their light when he has refused to learn how to cut down the cost of governance,” he wrote on social media platform X.
The President’s advice came on the heels of his administration’s decision to hike electricity tariffs and remove fuel subsidies. Since assuming office in May 2023, the cost of electricity has skyrocketed, with customers now paying N225 kilowatt per hour, up from N66.
