Overheated generator sparks fire at Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Lagos

A fire outbreak occurred late Thursday night at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research (FIIRO) office in Oshodi, Lagos State, reportedly caused by an overheated power generator.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that their timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings within the facility.

According to Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, the agency received distress calls about the fire at 10:20 PM and activated its emergency response team from the Cappa Base.

The team arrived by 10:22 PM to find the generator house engulfed in flames.

“Preliminary investigations conducted by our Response Teams revealed that the fire was caused by overheating of the generator engine,” Oke-Osanyintolu explained.

He added that the fire was successfully extinguished, and search-and-rescue operations, along with damping down efforts, were swiftly concluded. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported.

Despite the quick response, approximately 80% of the generator house was destroyed. However, the swift action of LASEMA teams curtailed the spread of the fire, sparing nearby structures from damage.
