The police in Gombe State have confirmed that 22 people were injured on Wednesday afternoon when a vehicle crashed into a Christmas procession in the Tumfure community.
According to a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Buhari Abdullahi, the incident occurred around 2 p.m. when the driver of a Sharon bus, which was carrying bags of rice, lost control and ploughed into a group of Christian faithful heading towards the emir’s palace and the Government House.
“The incident resulted in 22 injuries, but fortunately, there were no fatalities,” Abdullahi stated.
Following the crash, the injured individuals were quickly transported to the Federal Medical Centre and Specialist Hospital in Gombe for treatment.
Anger quickly escalated among bystanders, leading to the vehicle being set on fire by an irate mob. The driver, however, managed to flee the scene and remains at large.
Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, expressed his sympathy to the victims of the accident during a Christmas homage by the state leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) at the Government House.
He urged the local youth to stay calm amidst the situation.
