The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde has assured that justice would take its due course in the investigation and trial of those linked to the stampede in Ibadan.
Reacting to reports that some of those linked to the unfortunate incident are his close friends and associates, the governor assured the public that justice would be served to prevent such a disaster from recurring.
Makinde who spoke during a courtesy visit by the Muslim Community of Oyo State said those criticising him may not fully understand his principles and commitment to justice.
The visitors were led by Kunle Sanni as the governor acknowledged his perceived closeness with one of the suspects Oriyomi Hamzat, the proprietor of Agidigbo FM and a suspect in the case.
They had asked the governo to temper Justice with mercy in the case.
In his reaction, the governor said, “It is easier for people to say I know certain people, and they should be treated as such. What about the 35 innocent souls that died?
“Don’t they also deserve justice? That was why early this year, I signed off the rule of law enforcement authority. We want our systems to work like that of the developed world. The rule is the rule; the law is the law. But for us, we don’t want to do those things, and they are impeding our progress.
“Inasmuch as we’re fair to everybody, it is fine. On my watch, whoever deserves justice will get it. And how do we ensure that this does not occur again? Those are the things we have to look into,” Makinde said.
