Activist Mahdi Shehu who was arrested and detained for allegedly sharing a misleading video that went viral has been granted bail by the court.
The State High Court in Kaduna granted N3 million bail and two sureties in the like sum to Shehu on Thursday, January 9.
According to the court’s ruling the sureties must be renowned clerics.
Shehu is also expected to deposit his passport to the court and is not permitted to leave the country and must report to the office of the respondent every first working day of the month.
Shehu was picked by security operatives for sharing a video that threatened the national security on social media.
The activist was remanded in prison custody following an order by he Chief Magistrates’ Court (CMC 1) on Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Kaduna.
However, in its ruling, the Kaduna State High Court presided by Justice Murtala J. Zubair said, “Having listened carefully to the various submissions and considered the documents placed before me and based on the above analysis, I am of the humble view that the applicant has made out a case for his admittance to bail pending his arraignment before a competent judge.”
The judge also said that there is no proof or evidence to show that the defendant should not be granted bail.
