Obasa still in U.S.A as supporters of ex-Lagos Speaker reject allegations of corruption

Embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has stayed back in the United States amidst ongoing controversy surrounding his impeachment.

Obasa, who was impeached last Monday over allegations of fraud and misconduct, has garnered support from loyalists in his Agege Constituency 1, who vehemently reject the allegations.

The loyalists, including key community leaders and stakeholders, gathered on Friday at his constituency office in Agege to address the situation and strategize on countering what they described as politically motivated claims.

“The allegations against Obasa are nothing more than hearsay. “If Obasa expresses interest in becoming the next governor and God supports him, it is a source of pride for us in Agege.

“Those spreading these unfounded claims are not God,” Mr. Omodele Morufu, Chairman of the Community Development Committee for Agege Local Government Area said.

“We gathered here today to inform the people about what is truly happening so they can have the facts. We are here to strategise on the way forward and to counter any false narratives that may emerge from this development,” Morufu added.

On his part, Chief Ganiyu Egunjobi, Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, said, “Obasa remains the leader of Agege politics. Whether or not he was treated fairly by the Lagos Assembly, he is a good man and has done a lot for the people of this community.”

The Alaige of Orile Agege Kingdom, Oba Egbeyemi Lateef Oladimeji, stated, “What happened to him is simply politics among politicians. Obasa has been very good to me and the community.”

The former Speaker’s impeachment has sparked speculation, with political analysts suggesting it was less about the fraud allegations and more tied to his perceived ambition for the governorship position in 2027.

In Obasa’s absence, former Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was elected as the new Speaker, making history as the first female to hold the position.
