BREAKING: Nnamdi Kanu Drags Bashir Ahmad to Court, Seeks N1 Billion in Damages

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has taken a former media aide of President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, to court.

The IPOB leader is seeking N100 billion in damages over Ahmad’s comment on social media which he described as libelous and damaging.

Through his Lead Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kano filed the suit on Tuesday and is demanding an apology within 42 days.

Recall that Bashir Ahmed has said anybody demanding Kanu’s release is an enemy of the country.

“Anybody advocating for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, a terrorist and the leader of the proscribed terrorist organization IPOB, should be considered a sworn enemy of this country,” Ahmad had posted on X.

The originating summons of the suit against Ahmad reads: “You are hereby commanded within Forty-two (42) Days after the service of this writ on you inclusive of the day of such services you do cause an appearance to be entered for you in an action at the suit of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.”

Kanu is seeking a declaration that Ahmad’s published statements or utterances to the effect that Kanu is a terrorist, as published in the said X App (formerly Twitter), Talkofnaija.com and phoenix-browser.com, are libellous and defamatory. He is also seeking an order directing Ahmad to retract the said publication through another publication through the same media, particularly Ahmad’s X handle.

Furthermore, Kanu is seeking an order directing Ahmad to write and deliver to Kanu, an unreserved letter of apology, which shall be prominently and boldly published full-page in three national dailies, namely: the SUN, Daily Trust and Guardian. Kanu is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining Ahmad from further and forever uttering the said defamatory and libellous words about or concerning Kanu.

It added, “AN ORDER of this Honorable Court directing the Defendant to pay to the Claimant the sum of N100,000,000,000.00 (One Hundred Billion Naira only) being general and exemplary damages.

“AN ORDER of this Honorable Court directing the Defendant to pay the cost of this Suit.

“AND SUCH FURTHER ORDER(S) as this Honourable Court may deem fit and expedient to make in the circumstance.”
