JUST IN: University of Ibadan students protest over 82-day power outage

Students from the University of Ibadan staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday over the prolonged 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

The protest, which began early in the morning, was due to the students’ frustration with the lack of electricity at UCH, the teaching hospital for the university’s medical students.

The power outage, which started in 2024, was reportedly due to outstanding debts owed by UCH to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

Leading the demonstration, Bolaji Aweda, President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, expressed concern over the direct impact of the outage on students.

“We are protesting against what is happening. And, of course, our students are affected,” Aweda said.

“For 82 days, there has been no light at UCH, and this is due to the inability of UCH to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC. IBEDC has demanded that UCH must settle its debt before they will restore power,” he added.
