The Abia State lawmaker, Alex Ikwechegh who assaulted a Bolt driver last year has said that he is now friends with the man.
Ikwechegh, the lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency (APGA) while speaking on Channels Television said he had his lowest moment then.
The lawmaker had threatened to make Stephen Abuwatseya, a delivery man who had brought some snails he bought from a vendor disappear.
In a viral video that caused an outrage among Nigerians on social media, Ikwechegh slapped and insulted the Bolt driver repeatedly for allegedly disrespecting him.
He, however apologised over his action and explored alternative means to resolve the situation with the driver.
However, speaking on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, the lawmaker said he has become friends with Abuwatseya and his pastor.
Ikwechegh said, “What happened was quite unfortunate, but I take it that it’s an avenue for me as a person to also build a relationship with the young man that came. Today we are friends. It was taken to court, but of course, the court found no merits, and it was struck out.”
Stating that all parties involved have moved on from the past, the lawmaker said the actions he exhibited on that day does not in anyway represent who he is
He added, “The young man is my friend now. I’m very close to his bishop, his pastor. And I’ve met a bunch of new friends, and today, the whole Nigerian now knows me…I guess, we’ve moved on.”
