Some suspended lawmakers Zamfara State House of Assembly have taken to the streets of Abuja to protest their suspension.
The lawmakers, 10 in number – while petitioning their National Assembly described their suspension as a threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking on behalf of the embattled lawmakers, Ibrahim Tuku, read text jointly signed by all the suspended Zamfara State House of Assembly members.
According to Tuku, most of the decisions, including passage of the state’s 2025 Appropriation Bill, which was taken by 14 remaining lawmakers in the House against them were illegal, null and void.
Comprising six members of the Peoples Democratic Party and four from the All Progressives Congress, the lawmakers called the attention of the National Assembly to their ordeal.
They said they are optimistic their the lawmakers at the national level would intervene in resolving the challenge they were currently facing in Zamfara.
Tuku said, “We have been under undue and illegal suspension by the Assembly just because we have all along refused to dance to their tunes and serve as rubber stamps for the executive.
“We are hence calling for immediate rescinding of the purported declaration as vacant, the seat of the Minority Leader and member representing Talata-Mafara South State Constituency, Hon. Aliyu Ango Kagara by the Zamfara State House of Assembly under the leadership of Hon. Bilyaminu Ismail Moriki.
“We sent a petition to the National Assembly, they called us and asked us that we should go back, they will invite us for further investigation but up to this moment, we did not hear from them. We are waiting for their response,” the lawmakers added.
