Many Feared Killed As Demolition Turns Violent In Kano Community

A demolition process in Rimin Auzinawa, Ungogo Local Government Area of Kano State has turned violent leading to the death of four people.

Sources said the victims were shot when some security personnel opened fire on residents of the community who resisted the demolition by authorities.

The sources said the building under construction were marked for demolition by the Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority.

According to the sources, the buildings, about 40 of them were marked for demolition and belongs to Bayero University, Kano.

One of the residents who was affected by the process said documents for the buildings were cleared by the authorities who confirmed that the properties were not on the land of the university.

The source, “We resolved all issues with KNUPDA. They assured us our properties were not within BUK land. But on Sunday night, officials of KNUPDA and security operatives arrived and demolished the buildings.

“When people resisted, security forces opened fire, killing four individuals who have now been buried. It’s a tragic situation,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the police spokesperson in the state, Abdullahi Haruna noted that fatality was recorded on the stide of the Kano State command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
