JUST IN: Court Orders OSIEC to Conduct LG Council Election

The Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) has been ordered to go ahead with the conduct of the Local Government Council elections across the state.

This fresh order was was handed to the commission on Friday, February 21, 2025, by an Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo ahead of the polls earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, February 22.

An enrollment order had been tendered before the court by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against the commission and its chairman, Hashim Abioye.

Justice A Aderigbigbe in his ruling said that there is vacancy across the 30 LGAs in Osun state as declared by the Federal High Court.

The judge stated that the court has also discovered that the election which was conducted by the first defendant in 2022 was declared null and void.

He said it is also clear that all officials produced from that election have been sacked by the Federal High Court in a suit between the Action Peoples Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission and others.

Confirming that vacancy actually exists in these LGAs, the court upheld the prayers made by the PDP in the suit.

It also compelled all security agencies across the state including the Nigeria Police, the Department of State Security Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Army, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Amotekun Corps, the Vigilante groups to ensure that they provide adequate security throughout the election period.
