Obasa stormed Lagos Assembly complex with thugs, armed policemen – Sources

A major crisis erupted at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday as impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa stormed the Assembly Complex, accompanied by armed police officers and suspected thugs, in what sources described as an attempt to forcefully reclaim his position.

The embattled former Speaker’s dramatic return comes amid growing concerns over the security of his successor, Speaker Mojisola Meranda, whose official security aides were suddenly withdrawn just hours before Obasa’s arrival.

The development has left Meranda vulnerable and raised fears of a deliberate plot to destabilize the Assembly’s leadership.

Sources within Speaker Meranda’s camp confirmed to reporters that her security personnel were pulled out under unclear circumstances, leaving her without official protection while Obasa moved into the Assembly under heavy security escort.

“We don’t understand the reason for this sudden withdrawal, but all security aides attached to Speaker Meranda have been taken away. She is now left completely unprotected,” said Ganzallo Victor, her official spokesperson.

On the other hand, Obasa, who was impeached on January 13, 2025, had his security reinstated, further fueling speculations that powerful forces were working behind the scenes to orchestrate his return.

A senior legislative source revealed that Obasa arrived at the Assembly premises in a convoy of police vehicles, flanked by armed officers and a group of unidentified individuals believed to be political thugs.

“Yes, Obasa is currently at the complex with armed policemen and thugs. His intentions are clear, he wants to illegally reinstate himself as Speaker,” the source said.

Obasa, who was away in the United States at the time of his impeachment, has refused to accept his removal and has since challenged the decision in court. His legal team insists that the process was flawed and unconstitutional.

Despite his ongoing court case, Obasa had previously assured his supporters that he would not return to the Assembly until a ruling was obtained. However, his unexpected arrival on Thursday, accompanied by security forces and thugs, contradicts the claim.
