Nigerians taking lawmakers for granted, Orji Uzor-Kalu fumes

A former governor of Abia state and serving Senator, Orji Uzor-Kalu has decried the treatment given to lawmakers across the country by Nigerians.

Uzor-Kalu while speaking on Channels Television on Monday said so many Nigerians take their lawmakers for granted because they believe they are the cause of the hardship witnessed across the country.

The Senate chief whip said he is also affected by the biting hardship and has since tightened his belt.

He said, “The Assembly does not control any money. We sign the budget and it goes to the MDAs. For me I have tightened my belt.

“Before, I usually thought these lawmakers just sat there. But there’s a lot of work going on there. I’m telling you the truth,” Uzor-Kalu noted.

In an attempt to describe the level of work done by lawmakers to keep the nation running, the senator said he sometimes leaves work as late as 11 pm.

“So, people take Senators and House of Reps members for granted.

“But it’s not supposed to be like that. We should be respected. We agreed that we’re not the people running the country’s economy.

“Our duty is to make law, another arm of the government will execute the laws we’ve made,” he added.
