Federal High Court reassigns Nnamdi Kanu’s case to new judge

The Federal High Court, Abuja has reassigned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to a new judge in the court.

The case – bordering on terrorism – was reassigned by Justice John Tsoho, the chief judge of the Federal High Court.

Kanu’s was previously facing trial before Justice Binta Nyako of the same Federal High Court but his matter came under contention after the IPOB leader accused Justice Nyako of bias.

In addition to the accusation made by Kanu against the judge, Nyako also recused herself from the matter but her appeal was denied by the chief judge.

Confirming the new development, Aloy Ejimakor, the leader counsel to the IPOB leader said his client is more than ready to face his trial.

Ejimakor said, “Yesterday, before the legal team conducted our routine visitation to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, we received two separate official letters regarding his case. The letters are momentous and somewhat pyrrhic.

“One letter was from the Honourable Chief Justice of Nigeria, responding to a recent letter we had written to her, seeking her prompt administrative intervention (as the administrative head of Nigerian judiciary) on the matter of a proper and lawful reassignment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case, following the recusal of the Judge that was conducting it,” the lawyer said.

He also noted that there was a second letter informing the legal team of the reassignment of his client’s case to a new judge.

According to Ejimakor, Kanu has commended the Chief judge for the level at which he exercised his administrative discretion.

He also commended the public who have stood with him since his arrest and detention by the Nigerian government.
