Sexual harassment: Joy Nunieh will hear from my lawyer next week – Akpabio

The President of the 10th Senate, Godswill Akpabio has threatened to take legal action against Joy Nunieh, the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

Nunieh had accused the Senate President of sexual harassment during his time as the Minister of the Niger Delta Development Commission.

Speaking at an event organised by the National Assembly in commemoration of the 2025 International Women’s Day, Akpabio said it is unfortunate that some women weaponise gender against men, especially in workplaces.

He said, “My other sister, the one they sometimes referred to as Joy Nunieh, I like to mention her name because she will be hearing from my lawyer any time in the next one week.”

Reeling out some of the incidents that led to the brawl with Nunieh, the Senate President said he had only taken swift action by removing the former NDDC managing director after reports of controversy surrounding her certificates and qualifications.

Akpabio said, “Crime never dies, when I received a letter from the late Abba Kyari, the former chief of staff that her certificates were questionable and she did not do the National Youth Service, I wrote to the NYSC and the NYSC responded and then I quickly changed her before it became a scandal.

“As soon as she was changed, hell was let loose, she first said, “Oh Akpabio wanted me to swear to an oath of allegiance in the Villa.

“And then they told her that the whole Villa is wired, she said eeh! Then what do I say?

“And then, the next time she said, “he (Akpabio) tried to touch me and I slapped him, I am the first woman in Niger Delta to slap him”.

“Then Reuben Abati now said, “Is it like sexual harassment or rape? And she said not rape, maybe something like that, he asked what? Is it sexual harassment she, said, “Yes, sexual harassment,” Akpabio narrated.

Akpabio’s decision to take legal action against Nunieh years after her allegation comes on the heels of the crisis between him and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Akpoti-Uduaghan last week had also accused the Senate President of harassing her sexually and undermining her efforts to represent her constituents after she refused his advances.
