It’s height of legislative recklessness, Falana slams Senate on Natasha’s suspension

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana has slammed the Nigerian Senate over the recent suspension of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over alleged misconduct on the floor of the Red Chamber.

Falana said contrary to the decision of the Senate, the courts have already placed a ban on the suspension of lawmakers by the leadership of the National Assembly.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the human rights lawyer described Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension as the height of legislative recklessness perpetrated by the Senate.

He said with the pronouncement made by courts, especially the Appeal Court, the suspension of the Kogi lawmaker is illegal.

He urged the leadership of the Senate to immediately lift the suspension slammed on Akpoti-Uduaghan to avoid continued embarrassment of the hallowed chamber.

Falana also stated that since the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had restrained the Committee on Ethics and Privileges from hearing the complaints against the lawmaker, her suspension remains illegal.

He said, “The Federal High Court had restrained the Senate Ethics Committee from hearing the complaint against the embattled senator pending the determination of the motion on notice the Senate ought to have stayed action in accordance with the rule of law.”
