Killings: Details emerge as lawmakers donate N100m to Plateau govt, communities

Members of the House of Representatives on Friday announced the donation of N100 million in intervention funds to support victims of the incessant killings in Plateau State.

The lawmakers led by a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Idris Wase said the donation would be made to select communities affected by the killings in the state as well as the Plateau state government.

Presenting the cheques to Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Wase on behalf of the current speaker, Tajudeen Abbas said the lawmakers were in the state to commiserate with the victims of the killings.

In a statement released by Gyang Bere, media aide to the governor, the delegation said the donation is an initiative of the House to cushion the effects of the violent attacks against the people of Plateau.

He also assured the Speaker’s and the House’s committment to mobilising support for the victims from the Federal Government.

Giving a breakdown of the donations, Wase said N50 million was given to the Plateau State Government, N20 million each to Bassa, and Bokkos LGAs and N10 million to Riyom Local Government Area.

Appreciating the lawmakers for their concern for the people of Plateau, Mutfwang said the attacks have left many households homeless and some children fatherless and/or motherless.

He also commended the unity of the lawmakers in addressing the challenges faced by the people.

The governor said, “We are working diligently to provide immediate assistance to victims of the Terminus Market fire. No effort will be spared to ensure our traders bounce back stronger. Their resilience represents the true spirit of Plateau, and we will stand firmly by them.”
