Popular social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has been arrested and detained by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
His lawyer confirmed the development on Friday.
The arrest reportedly took place at the GTBank branch in Area 3, Garki, Abuja. The influencer had earlier accused the bank of fraudulently using his mother’s National Identification Number (NIN) to approve a loan without her consent.
In a post shared on Instagram before his arrest, VDM wrote:
“If GT-BANK can do this to my mother then they are doing it to a lot of Nigerians. How can you say someone used my mother’s NIN to collect loan? Like how? Where is your customer security? Which account did you credit when you approved the loan @gtbank?”
Initially, reports had claimed that he was picked up by the police. However, the FCT Police Command denied any knowledge of the arrest.
In a fresh update, human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju revealed that VDM is currently in EFCC custody.
He stated:
“Our lawyers led by the Head of our firm @Marvin_Omorogbe just met VDM’s friend who was arrested together with him in EFCC custody. VDM refused to come out of the cell; that he won’t see anyone. VDM was locked inside the GTB exit door for over 5mins to enable EFCC arrest him and his friend. We will be taking legal actions against GTB for the inhumane treatment meted out to our client.”
