JUST IN: Jonathan Warns Against Push for One-Party System in Nigeria

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has warned that turning Nigeria into a one-party state would harm the nation’s democracy.

Jonathan made his displeasure known while speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during a memorial lecture for the late elder statesman, Edwin Clark.

“Any nation that must practice it must do so carefully and with a well-planned process and projected outcome,” Jonathan said.

His comments come amid concerns over growing defections of opposition politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and continued internal crises in opposition parties. Many believe these are being influenced by President Bola Tinubu and his party to weaken the opposition.

Jonathan stressed that trying to create a one-party system through manipulation and selfish ambitions would be dangerous. According to him, any attempt to bring about a one-party state through political machinations to soothe personal aspirations will be detrimental to the country.

He also urged the family of the late Edwin Clark to set up an annual memorial lecture in his name, to promote his vision of a united and fair Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, expressed concern about Nigeria’s current direction. He said the labour of heroes past was already in vain pointing to poverty in rural areas, insecurity, and the high cost of living.

Obi added that the sacrifices of patriotic Nigerians like Pa Clark have not yielded the expected results.

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the event, called for unity, saying Nigeria can only move forward when national interest comes before personal gain.
