“Men who stand for nothing” – PDP slams Edo Speaker, others for defecting to APC

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed Chief Blessing Agbebaku, Speaker of the 8th Edo State House of Assembly, over his recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as “a stage-managed spectacle” and evidence of long-standing betrayal.

Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, Chairman of the PDP Caretaker Committee in the state, made the remarks while addressing journalists at the party’s secretariat in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin City.

He said the party was neither surprised nor moved by Agbebaku’s move and accused him of being a closet APC loyalist for months.

“Tuesday’s stage-managed fanfare was not news. It was merely the official coronation of what had become a public secret. For months, Agbebaku had served the interests of the APC, in both conduct and allegiance,” Aziegbemi stated.

He ridiculed the APC’s public celebration at Urhokpota Hall, near the palace of the Oba of Benin, calling it a “desperate spectacle” intended to impress President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC national leadership.

Aziegbemi pointed to Agbebaku’s role in suspending duly elected local government chairmen—mostly PDP members—as proof of his loyalty to the APC.

“Despite the expiration of the illegal suspension, he refused to reinstate them. That alone speaks volumes,” he said.

Reacting to APC’s claim that 17 out of 18 local government chairmen in Edo also defected, the PDP leader dismissed the assertion as “pure fiction,” challenging APC and Governor Monday Okpebholo to produce the names of any actual PDP chairmen who made such a move.

“What they paraded are political appointees and stooges, illegally imposed on the councils.

“This is part of APC’s broader strategy to create a false narrative of political dominance in Edo State,” he added.

Aziegbemi declared that the PDP remains unshaken, stressing: “Men who stand for nothing will always fall for anything. Edo people are politically aware and cannot be deceived by such theatrics.”

He urged PDP supporters across the state to remain focused and committed to the party’s ideals, assuring them that legal steps are being taken to reclaim what he called the “stolen mandate” of the party’s governorship candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in the September 21, 2024 election.
