“I’m not going back to the villa” – Patience Jonathan declares support for Tinubu ahead of 2027

Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan has declared that she has no intention of returning to Aso Rock, throwing her full support behind President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at the Women Icon Leader of the Year award ceremony hosted by Accolade Dynamics Limited in Abuja on Saturday night, Jonathan made the remarks while honouring Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, the President’s daughter and Iyaloja-General of Nigeria.

“I’m not going back to the villa. If you call me, I will not go,” Jonathan said, putting to rest any speculation about her or her husband, former President Goodluck Jonathan, seeking another shot at the presidency.

She used the occasion to praise Tinubu-Ojo for her advocacy for women and reaffirmed her support for the First Lady.

“I was supposed to call her first, but I saved her for last: the daughter of our wonderful President, the President of Nigeria, the one and only we believe in, President Bola Tinubu. Iyaloja, thank you for standing with women because these are your women. Carry them along; they are with you,” Jonathan stated.

Addressing the audience, she added, “All the way, we are with you. No shaking. We will follow. Direct us, and we will follow. Because there is only one president at a time. We don’t have two presidents.”

Jonathan continued: “I believe in one president. I believe in turn-by-turn. When it’s your turn, I will support you. When it’s not your turn, step back, so that the country can move forward.”

She also recalled her longstanding relationship with Senator Oluremi Tinubu, noting their political and personal ties that date back to her days as the wife of a deputy governor.

“I didn’t just know her because she’s the First Lady. We worked together even when I was a deputy governor’s wife. I know her well. Even when my husband was vice president, she and her husband stood with us and supported our first presidential election,” she said.

“For me, I have a conscience. I cannot abandon my friend. I told her I would campaign with her. I’m not denying her. I’m not running,” Jonathan concluded.
