The leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has ordered a sit-at-home to mark its annual commemoration of the Biafra Heroes Memorial Day.
The group, in a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, said there would be a total lockdown of shops, markets, schools, offices and activities across the states of the Southeast region.
According to Powerful, May 30 has been declared a public holiday in the region as the day has been dedicated to the remembrance and honour of all Biafran heroes and heroines who lost their lives in the struggle for Biafra’s self-determination and independence during and after the civil war.
He urged residents across the states of the region to adhere to the strict sit-at-home order, which would take place from 6am to 6pm on May 30.
Powerful said, “This one-day total lockdown is a solemn act of remembrance. We must stay indoors to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the Nigeria-Biafra war and in our continued fight for freedom.
“No movement, no market, no school, no church, no social gatherings. Only emergency and essential services will be exempted,” he stated.
Stating that the lockdown will affect all forms of transportation, the IPOB said the order is aimed at avoiding a repeat of incidents which occurred in the past, where miscreants took over the day to commit mayhem in some states.
He also said that the IPOB has reached out to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) for an adjustment in its timetable to ensure that students are safe and not penalised by the exam body.
The group also called on its members in the Diaspora to ensure they organise peaceful protests and town hall meetings in memory of the lost heroes.
In addition, Nigerians in the Diaspora were urged to use the opportunity to call on the international communities to prevail on the Federal Government to release the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
The group also warned members across states in Nigeria, especially the Southeast region, to desist from any form of protest on the Biafra Memorial Day.
This, Powerful said, is aimed at preventing a crackdown on its members by security operatives.
He also stated that this year’s celebration would be marked by several broadcasts and activities by the group.
